Still trying to relax more

Bit like buses really, no blog for ages then 3 at once. I have joined an on-line mixed media group, so I take pictures and load them each day, therefore they are ready to pop on here and only takes a mo. Besides, I do like to keep you all entertained, and the more of my attempts you see the more you know you can do this too, and probably much better LOL.
So, OH tells me I am trying to hard again and need to chill out and just enjoy what I am doing without worrying about whether or not I will create the next masterpiece. Today has been just that and my creation of Freda the Fish and her dancing friends now has him quite concerned the plot is on its way down the road - I thought it was fun turning my silver slodgy circles into little dancing characters, poor Freda was not as whimsy as she should have been, my head had her more floaty I dont quite have the hang of that yet...

Now although Teddy is not the best he did teach my how to free draw with charcoal on layers today, was a bit scary but improvement on the outlines than ink I think so might be having another go at this, I had quite a time playing with charcoal today basically just making marks to try get some control.

Lasty is today's Art Journal entry, I have joined a few groups on this too so sorry you may well be subjected to viewing some waffle in the journal from time to time, Art Journals are great for daily practice. Tomorrows pages are currently gesso coated in readiness for then, not that I have a clue what I am doing yet if anything.. as spending most of the morning having to split up all the dog walking with having no car then the afternoon awaiting the fix-it man, not ideal to start any painting so hoping there will be some time left afterwards.

We were lucky enough not to get any snow here over the weekend, though it was very chilly earlier with freezing fog and ice, the pavements were deadly - good job I just walk my oldest dog first thing, although I was slower than her today and the penguin style walking is not kind to the legs. The local park walk with them all later on was ok, still icy and both Alfie and Jaja managed to fall over on the ice, the old lady Tess had more sense though and avoided the slippery parts.

Hoping we get a few warmer days in, I'm told the freeze is back for next weekend though, bbbbbbbbbrrrrrrrrrrr.

Oh dear, well I tried

As I said yesterday I had this great idea to make some bookmarks, so last night they were all cut out and gesso added ready to begin today. Still on the mixed media, aka make a big mess and try turn it into something nice? well... I made the mess! Not quite turned out as I had hoped and still not finished, but I will continue anyway to be sure my idea works even though the design clearly does not, YET.

The OH has informed me I have gone back to trying to hard, I must just enjoy and stop trying... not quite so easy as catastrophe struck last night on his return with his car on the back of the flatbed AA truck. As if that wasn't bad enough he went out to move my car to clear space and my back rear window exploded! so we currently have both vehicles off the road with hefty repair bills each. Of course on the bright side, thank heavens it happened last night and not today when the dogs were in the car, doesnt bare thinking about.

But, doesnt help my 'trying to hard' thing as these darn cars need paying for and unless I start shaping myself in some way I will be out of funds for my next tub of gesso! not to mention (get this) after reading Zoe's blog, seems I also need some 'Modge Podge' (bet that blew your mind Mick)..

Before I started on the Greyhounds today I first tried in my Art Journal, you see I have the 'theory' just cant quite get the effect I wish onto the paper. As my illustrator friend says 'PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE' better go do some more, just some light sketching tonight see if I can improve that.

No snow here as yet, but an awful lot of rain - just right for nice loooong dog walks now I have no car for a few days, and there I was worried about driving in it not a problem now. Every cloud and all that..

Mixed Media and Collage

My Goodness, its 9 days since I last blogged - were on earth did they go? During that time I have been learning all about mixed media and art journals, what fun it is too. Having started following a few of the experts on their blogs I have finally worked out what its all about, that is lots of layers and even collage (remember that?) some more books and products later and here are the first things I have come up with. I am quite fond of my penguins, here is a closer look at them.

I am trying to design a birthday card for a friend (and one day maybe even for sale) not quite got there yet, but more fun had trying.

This one had my most layers, collage and stamps ever - I realise I do still have more to go, and of course more practice at faces and fleshtone, it would also have helped if my ink hadnt decided to blotch on me.. cant tell you just how much fun this is to do, I'm told more practice is what helps you get there...so plenty of that going on..

I really must go clean up though, had so much fun this week the OH was away on a course so I had more time and space as totally demolishing the kitchen work tops with paint, glue and my latest discovery 'gesso' was fantastic and he will be back in a few hours, eeeeeeeeek. That and much less PC time, as I the neck and shoulder pain is worse when I am on here, so OH has promised to sort that out this weekend, something to do with chair and space he thinks.

Last thing I did today was make a start on some bookmarks, I have cut out 8, coated them with gesso last night front and back, and I have done some paint layers, sketches and stamps on them so far (well 5 of them). The idea came about as I have lots of books on Journalling etc and keep loosing my place so need some bookmarks, but again its a possible selling idea for the future, so see how it goes - really do need to do something with my shop soon, my supplies bill is getting rather high.. I do have some more bags to list but need to sort out my chair etc to do the photographs (yes, more excuses..).

Ok, waffled enough now - hope everyone is keeping warm for the big freeze forcast in the UK, if the forcast stays true its just for a few days so not too bad.

A Day off, to take away pressure

I followed some fabulous advice from a blog link on Zoe's blog, basically stop trying so hard. I was spending all my time desperatly trying to create something fabulous, too much pressure. So yesterday was a day off to just play with paint, pencils and inks. I did the above painting in my journal for fun and straight from my head (how worrying is that?) obviously my poor little people need some work, but the rest of it wasnt too bad, and I enjoyed it, used inks, watercolours and coloured pencils.

My mermaid was my very first attempt at drawing with indian ink and a dip pen, then painted her in watercolour and added inks to the background sea (yes, its meant to be sea) but again, relaxed and just had fun.

Not sure if you can read this, found out later the blue ink is rubbish and not water proof, but this was my free art journal time, after being very lucky enough to win a super book "Journal Bliss by Violette" on Darlenes blog "Freenie Belle - Living the Creative Life", everyone should have this book, as Violette says 'cheaper than a therapist'.. Now I am lucky enough not to sufer from depression (but I have done many years ago) but to anyone who does, this book is made for them, such a positive book with suggestions on how to 'let it all out' in your journal.
For me, the Art Journal is to create and have fun (well it is now I read the book) also the more practice done the greater the improvement. So I am going to (at least try hard too) stop trying and relax and enjoy.

Also need to sort out a chair, to try stop the neck ache that is causing some grief, must be a way, so going to try an adjustable chair from the other room, and perhaps look out for a more suitable stool or something to put myself at a better height, so frustrating not being able to do as much as I would like, though I do keep loosing hours worth of time.

Wont get much done today, got to go out soon and its dog class tonight - but hope to find an hour later at least to pick up a pencil for a while.

whimsicals?

I think I finally have it, after an awful lot of reading and experimenting I am having a crack at whimsical art, from what I read this is about taking a real image and adding your own take on it, lets face it I have not quite mastered making it look identical LOL, but that was never the idea. So, I chose a few subjects and put on my own take on them, wondering if I can turn these into cards? might just have a try. Here is my take on an owl, I thought he was quite sweet, also mixed media I have used inks, pastels and watercolours throughout.

Here is my frog, I never showed you but I have countless drawings of frogs, never quite managing to get their feet right, but with whimsical you can add your own, and try give their own little personality.

Lastly here is Fiona the fish, started from a goldfish image and somewhat expanded.

Whilst resizing I then had a bit of a play in photoshop, not sure if I like the originals or the digitally modified versions, so here they are with a bit of PC drama..

I am still practising the calligraphy, about an hour a day as it is starting to feel a bit like 'lines from school', but its getting there.. then I find myself doodling around it. Had to stop doing lines and do some quotes to make it more interesting to learn.

Going to have a go at printing out some cards and 'maybe' try them on sale see how they go..

Calligraphy

How hard can it be? sometimes wonder if that should be booked for my headstone. With my recent drawings I wanted to add some inspirational quotes, so I had a go and wow what awful writing I had! This simply had to be dealt with, and I found many artists used beautiful calligraphy on their work, so ordered pens, ink and books. This coincided with my telling a few friends of my enjoying working with ink and they assumed I meant indian ink and were very impressed, not so impressed when I said it was infact graphic pens. So, the idea of calligraphy went hand in hand with having a try with real ink and real pens.

Of course this cannot be learnt overnight, but according to my Mum I did infact do this at school, which was only 30 odd years ago she has always wanted me to go back to it.

I set to work today, my first lesson (as their always is with jumping in feet first) was how on earth to fit an ink cartridge, as I had decided to try this first - needless to say that all went very wrong and their is now ink just about everywhere, all over me, the table, the chairs and the floor. Here is my first attempt from following insturctions, first learn shapes with a pencil, then learn the alphabet.. Excuse the ink all over the place..

I then had a go at my favourite quote of the week, I may well do better with the next cartridge I havent pierced with a stick and leaked it everywhere so the flow is not too good, making the letters a bit wobbly to say the least. I would like to say the mistake was intentional, but alas it was not... but does add to the appeal and the quote.

Next I tried dip pens, I am having a lot of fun with them, but not quite worked out the right nib for lettering yet - already my writing has improved though, so might be able to finish off some of the background work I have already done at some point. Never know I might actually have something a bit more impressive to show next time.

Thank you to Mick and my friend Julie for concern on the family news in last blog. Without going into too much detail, a close family member had a cancer scare after a final test this week got the 'all clear' so after a lot of worry and upset of what the future may have held, all is now well.

Back to the pens and the fun.

My first Mandala

Not much going on in my art world or Etsy shop just now, needing to care for a family member so may well be a bit quiet for a while. The beauty of my new art discoveries though, means it is something that can be done 'on the move' or in waiting rooms etc, also does help you not to go quietly insane (honest).

Whilst having a free hour to browse a day or so ago I discovered a wondeful art site called 'Artisfun.com' has a lot of free teaching and ideas, that is were I discovered the Mandala, of course I have seen many around but not actually known what they were, here is the explanation from the Artisfun website:

What is a mandala?
A mandala is a complex abstract design that is usually circular in form. In fact, "mandala" is a Sanskrit word that means "circle". Mandalas generally have one identifiable center point, from which emanates an array of symbols, shapes and forms.

Mandalas can contain both geometric and organic forms. They can also contain recognizable images that carry meaning for the person who is creating it.

In essence, mandalas represent the connection between our inner worlds and outer reality. Designing your own mandalas can be both inspirational and therapeutic.

If you look around Etsy there are many of these wonders, far better than my first attempt, in the future I will show you an improved version (not done one yet of course but I will).

See, anyone can do this - and I can tell you its very relaxing to do. Mine was done in mixed media, inks, pastel and watercolour.

Birthday Cards

Whoops, seems I have been neglecting the blog again! When I started my art journey last year it slipped my mind my original intention was to try designing some cards. I was reminded this week when first I had to hurry out and buy one, then realised I had another two birthday's this week. So, the above is for my uncle who is a Laurel and Hardy fan, I think he is 71 this time. Hope he likes it, it was quite fun to do. The next one, was another valuable lesson learnt, first this would not be a good idea to sell one like this, as I started it on Friday and finished today, so at an hourly rate cant see it selling somehow LOL. Secondly I learnt NOT to do zen doodle ontop of a printed book were the print can then come off on the back of the card! Luckily Mum helped me sort it out by suggesting another column of pattern design on the back to cover most of it, but of course this took another two hours to do.

I have been busy with my new journal too, this has helped me a lot as instead of filling my head with things I must remember I want to do, I have been able to list them at the back, along with a few tips I pick up thus emptying some space in my head and helping sleep. Still not finished playing with my first page either, but second page was used for some people sketching to help with proportion etc.

I was very excited on Thursday night as I won a blog prize in Darlene's blog of an Art Journal Doodle book, I cant wait for it to arrive - the very same book was on my wish list on Amazon. Also yesterday I was given a whole stack of paints, paper and brushes that used to belong to my late friend Jess, from her son Paul - so kind of him and I am very grateful.

Well, back to the sketch book, to work my way through this list of things I want to do. Hope everyone has had a great weekend, weather has been glorious very cold but lovely and bright and sunny, giving us some spectacular sunrises to look at.

Are we having fun yet?

Cant tell you just how much I am enjoying this, I can just about see these ACEO things now, so got on with a few more. These are illustrated with ink and coloured with either inks or coloured pencil, depending on which I feel appropriate (get me). I think these are a vast improvement on the first flowers I tried to draw way back when, and I quite liked the giraffe too.

I am really loving the zen doodles, purchased some new pens which I am finding far easier than the 0.6 graffic pen I was using before, these are a bit of fun with the Nerd and the flowers who is penciled grey to make him look more boring, and the little girl presenting flowers to her Mum.

A bit more fun here with my own Alien appearing in the doorway to say 'hi' and the VW Camper in a dream bubble with hippy colour doodles.

I have now got very brave and ordered some ACEO sleeves, not sure if I am good enough to sell yet, but I already have one offer for a swap so might see how that goes for a bit of fun. Also awaiting my very first Art Journal, again inspired by the wonderful works Zoe (Fordy) does, gives me somewhere to plan out my ideas, and if all else fails I can bore you all to death with what I do in there LOL.

Must confess I have done very little with my Etsy shop this week, but as look would have it I was selected for the team treasury this week, so everyone else in the Craftyfolk
has been including me in their fantastic treasuries, I have had one sale from one already and higher views, wish it was my turn every week.

I must also thank so many kind people out there who have been giving me so much support and encouragement, I know I am not Picaso yet (by a long chalk) but its so nice to be spurred on to keep trying. Special thanks to Janice from Wellydog for taking time to look and comment when she is so busy with her own fabulous art and studio.

Better get on, my fingers are itching to pick up those pens again.

Time to try ACEO

Each day whilst I browse the daily listing thread from the Craftyfolk team on Etsy Craftyfolk
I alwasy admire our artists, they are so talented. I have noticed that many of them do very well with ACEO's, which are minature art trading cards 3.5" x 2.5". So, I thought I would have a go at these, wow what hard work it was, hard enough trying to draw on a normal scale, but I found trying to draw so tiny even harder, makes me realise just how talented these artists really are, and its nowhere near as easy as they make it look. Here are my attempts from this week... Not sure how this got in here, its my pastel drawing of a donkey, not an ACEO but now he is here you may as well see him too..

Here is one of the first ACEO's, not brilliant as my poor deceased Greyhound is not that good a likeness, this was done from a photograph taken on our holidays a few years back, meant to be my beloved late Greyhounds Dave and Zola.

Yes, I do have a thing for donkeys, here is one from a photograph taken at the Donkey Sanctuary in Derbyshire..

Having joined the Strathmore on line art class, this week our course work is on Doodles, believe it or not I have never done doodles before.. this lead me to take a closer look at Zen Doodles which I have had a play with, wonder what Zoe our Queen of Zen Doodles will have to say (sorry Zoe, not quite in your league yet). This is the second one I did, I really enjoyed it, very relaxing and a lot of fun..

This was the first one I had a go at, more research was needed clearly - so had another look around after this..

I have finished my course work for the class, and taken the photo's - oh dear me, really not in the same league as the other artists there, but still it was a lot of fun and I got to make an awful lot of mess using all the media, as the first class is to try mixed media and a stencil and free doodle drawing. Might treat you to that one next time, meanwhile I am awaiting OH to set me up a new email so I can create a new flickr account and join in there with the other class members. Now the rest of today is 'meant' to be working on my Etsy shop and sorting out some listings for the week.. will I do that? or will I just start doodling again...

My talented friend

As promised on a previous post, my friend Jules has sent me her artwork. Bare in mind we have been friends for... erm... a very long time (we were christened on the same day in the same church) but dont see each other as often as we should. On my annual Christmas visit I told her I had picked up the paints and pencils to have a go at learning art, she sat there over the large glasses of wine we had, open mouthed... I didnt think it was THAT strange.. Then she dashed off to show me, she too had started up art last year, though having gone a bit further than I at school she is much better at it, but we are now sharing our fun and sure as a result will see more of each other this year (that is of course if we can put the paints down long enough)

Happy New Year 2012

Happy New Year to you all, may 2012 make all your wishes come true.

Yesterday my dogs and Bailey (the retriever I walk) had a great, and rather wet walkies with thier friends, not as many of us as usual for New Years Day as it was totally pouring down.

I am wondering whether or not to start a new blog for my art learning curve? or just stick to here? thoughts needed, see how it goes - as I am getting totally hopeless at advertising my Etsy shop and those of my crafty friends, but please do click on the Etsy shop link and take a look at my wares, and other fab crafters, you just might have a few pennies left to spend and well worth spending with the super crafts on Etsy.

The art work has continued, though I did have a bit of a setback over the weekend, when I foolishly showed the family what I have been doing, when will I ever learn? cant say they were very supportive, and their lack of enthusiasm 'almost' made me give up... but then I remembered the same thing when I started Bags of Swank, and they still think I should 'get a proper job'.

Anyway, here is my first 'real' painting, its adapted from artwork by Jean Dunand so not my own work entirely, I swapped the 'Deer' she had for Greyhounds.

Today, I had another go with the graphite pencils, I have been doing some study of how to achieve shading and how to draw 'fur' of course still needs an awful lot of practice but I do think I am 'slowly' improving.

Lastly, I was telling my team on Etsy about my sketch of the president, not one of my greatest efforts, again practice for shading really - I think he looks a bit like a spitting image puppet, my Dad asked if it was Rowen Atkinson? My Mum hadnt got a clue who it was 'meant' to be.. definatly back to the drawing board I know but I am working hard at it - my Dad has threatened to show his bottom on the town hall steps if I ever sell any artwork, so I will be sure to take the camera for that occasion.. their continued lack of enthusiasm does tend to spur me on more, along with the vow never to bother showing anything else I do.

Thankfully, my husband and a few of my closest friends are very supportive. Infact my oldest friend Julie has also picked up her pencils again after 30 years, so we are having a great time chatting about our efforts and showing each other what we do, she is very good - if she ever sends me anything by email I will show you. While I am working on Donkeys at the moment, she is doing Elephants - so sure they will be fabulous.

Ok, thats enough for today - back to work for many tomorrow, I really must do a bit more with my Etsy shop, I have started listing each day with the Craftyfolk team and made my first sale of the year yesterday.

First attempt at pastel

I have been challenged to put each day's artwork right here on my blog! Dont worry, I have NOT taken up that challenge, but do intend to keep a record here in the hope we will all one day say some improvement. Today was not a good day at the easel.

Somebody thought it would be a good idea for me to try pastel, might have been an idea if I had learnt how first, not straight in then think... 'this is not going well, maybe I should find out how' Of course drawing is not my strong point, so I did a quick frog sketch then went for it (feel free to laugh here)

Its meant to be frogs in a tree hollow surrounded by flowers and trees, at least that was in my head. On a quick spot of research I found you can also add water to pastels, so I tried a bouquet from my head (yes, it is supposed to be a bouquet, LOL)

Disovering that a wee bit more research was quite obviously needed for the pastel thing, I got out the new brushes and had a quick practice, in case you were wondering I have been studying chinese art - I have the theory, but not quite the practice yet, but still I did enjoy it.

During today's research and study I have reached the decision it is highly unlikely the SimJaTa Art shop will be opening on Etsy next year - just now I am planning around 2017, so make yourself comfy for the wait.

One of my jobs before the end of the year is to work out a schedule so I can fit in the sewing to keep the Etsy shop fresh, and pleny of art time and study, this inbetween life in general - there must be a way, after all I only sleep for around 7 hours, so that leaves 17 hours in theory, 3 hours a day dog walking, cooking, washing, parent sitting, dog club, shopping..... well maybe the sleep will have to go? sure there is a way, just needs some thought....

Off to do some sketching..

Duncan the Retired Donkey

Duncan the retired Donkey, lives life to the full. With so many hobbies he never has time to be bored!

Well, I thought he was good LOL, Duncan is my very first character. Having been lucky enough to received a ton of art books, pens, pencils and paints.. I have been in my element all day, studying and drawing. So, Duncan is who I came up with. Unfortunatly when I showed the OH he said he looks nothing like a Donkey.. so yet again I am back to the drawing board on whether to adapt Duncan to be more donkey like, or to change Duncan into another creature... though if he is not a donkey I am not quite sure what he could be?? any ideas?

I should really be working too, I also received a huge amount of embroidery silks, ribbon and trimmings to create new brooches for my Etsy shop... but hey its still bank holiday. I hope everyone in blogland got some super pressies and are having lots of fun like I am.

Merry Christmas from SimJaTa

A Merry Christmas to all in blogland. A week early I know but I plan to be busy practicing my drawing and painting over the Christmas season, and unless I think I have anything good enough to show you will probably be pretty quiet. Today, with the help of Shoo Rayner
I drew and painted this Christmas wreath, going to laminate and put it on the front door, again it is NOT my design but Shoo's. This is the first real picture I have used watercolour paints, and must say I did enjoy it I found it far easier than my time spent attempting to learn pencil shading, just not getting my head around that one at all. I only have a small set of waterpaints, so hoping Santa might be reading this and be kind enough to provide some more.

It is also the time of year when my dogs have been subjected to wearing the Christmas hats, see just how much they enjoy it? Anyway they too wanted (as I told them they did!) to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. Hope all the crafters out there enjoy a break from awaiting the sales fairy visit, and she too comes back nice and refreshed ready to visit Etsy in the new year.

SimJaTa Scarves arrive on Etsy

Here are a couple of my new scarves that will find their way to my Etsy shop this week, I think I have about ten in total. Certainly becoming the weather for them with snow on the way very soon, we felt a definate chill in the air this morning. I didnt even pick up a pencil yesterday but took the time to photograph and edit some of the scarves ready for the shop, quite happy with the results. I added this one today, so we have one for sale already, the picture will magically transport you to the shop for further details.

Now dont go away, I also wish to introduce you to a very special man and very talented illustrator I have been lucky enough to chat with on Etsy, Eric Kincaid

His showcase of work extends from illustrating comics such as 'Dan Dare' to a collectors edition of 'Wind in the Willows' plates. After being a freelance illustrator and working with companies such as WALT DISNEY he was employed long term by Brimax publishing house. He has illustrated over 100 books ..

I was lucky enough to discover his shop whilst preparing a treasury of Art, then ordered some of his fabulous Christmas Cards, you can find these by clicking on the picture of one of the works of art I purchased.

There are also prints of his work for sale in his shop, not just a spectacular talent but also a true gentleman.

This years Christmas Cards, handmade of course!

Now be gentle, remember I have only been learning to draw for a few weeks now, previously it has been over 30 years since I held a pencil, and I have only just learnt there is actually more than an HB! I have spent all my free time drawing and I love it! I had no idea you could actually 'learn' to draw. Therefore, like it or not this year everyone will be receiving a hand drawn Christmas card (or at least I hope so, as I have only done 12 so far and time is ticking on). Before you look I must point out these are NOT my own design, but the design of Shoo Rayner
a very talented illustrator, if you follow the link it will take you to his website for further information, and were you can purchase his books. He is also a fantastic teacher, and by following his direction these are what I have done so far, along with some other basic sketches I am learning. Thank you very much Shoo.

First are my angels, this one I did today - my very first attempt.

I confess I have done about six of these, this was the first thing I learnt and they are now in all kinds of colour schemes, OH says this one is his favourite.

This was last nights, and my very first reindeer - plenty to improve yet, but not bad for a first attempt I thought.

This was my second robin, the first one had a bit of a hump back problem. A bit more research needed on the colour scheme yet, but plenty of fun learning.

My third lot of snowmen, I like these - if Shoo is reading, sorry about the hat - I did this one at my desk without direction, so improvement needed on the hat and perhaps a few more brush bristles wouldnt have gone a miss.

You may well get to see some of my own art soon, one of my best friends is a retired art teacher, and now she is convinced I 'am' serious she is givng me my first art lesson this week, I think it might be shells. I have been told to bring my pencils, easel and paper. Hope to show you that later in the week.

Dont forget, life is too short not to try what you want to do - and its never too late. Everyone can draw, just takes a bit of guidence and plenty of PRACTICE!!!!

..and then I painted them

Ok I threatened you with this last time, and promised I did actually get around to painting the clay works and the papier mache, but all did not go so well. My shop does not contain any of this - even my sense of humour is not that bad. Here is some of the jewellery I tried.

These are the decorations I 'attempted' my poor parents are being 'forced' to add these to their Christmas tree.

Finally, my first attempts at papier mache.. now I have seen real masterpieces done in this, alas not mine. I think I may well need a few months or even years of practice here.

I am however really enjoying learning to draw, after all these years - and the OH assures me my artworks are coming on well, of course they could ONLY get better, here is the first elephant I have ever attempted. He does at least look like an elephant, he is now on Auntie's fridge as I made him into a thank you card for her for some help she had given us of late.

I have spent today doing some new listings for my Etsy shop, I made a Frosty the Snowman treasury on Etsy, and now its time to do some more sketching which is my favourite pasttime, I just love drawing, not that good yet of course - but I love it, wish I had taken it up years ago, hope to do more painting this week too. My idea is to make my own Christmas cards to send, once I have mastered my Christmas tree I will show you that, I am getting help though so not strictly my own work so certainly not for sale - but all in aid of learning how to draw and in time develop my own style (so I am told).

Every Picture Tells a Story

Apologies I have become a very bad blogger again, I cant even use the excuse of too much work, family or any other commitments. I had the idea I wanted to learn to paint. I did manage to finish the clay and mache creations, but OH has run off with my camera so cant enthrall you with those disasters yet, but I will! No, for today you can laugh at my 'art'. It was going very badly and I 'almost' gave up at weekend until I read a fabulous blog post from "CaroleeCrafts" about inspiration and not waiting to do what you wish, so I have carried on, thank you Carol. Also one of my team members from Etsy spurs me on (probably as she wants a good laugh) so here you go Jen, this is what I have been up too.

Before this one, my angels did resemble something from the Rocky Horror show. I have finished this one today and I am going to frame it for my Mum's birthday. Ever the optomist she wanted a piece of my new artwork for her birthday (no pressure). I would like to say I created her all by myself but no, I have purchased some books to help me learn to draw so this is adapted from one of those, but she is all my own work - no tracing.

I quite liked this one too, also done today and a vast improvement on the Rocky Horror show ones, I know I still have rather a long way to go - and plenty of work yet on features, but as OH said "at least you can tell what it is" so thats a start.

This was my weekend effort, I wanted to paint a bouquet for my Mum, as you can see I do need an awful lot of practice, and for starters learning how to draw a vase might be an idea, this one looks like a pint pot! But I enjoyed painting and the colours, again you can just about make out what it is meant to be LOL (Janice from Wellydog, I really hope you are NOT reading this!)

This was my very first attempt with coloured pencils, bare in mind I hadnt actually picked one up in over 30 years.

Spurred on by my angels I thought I would adapt the same principle to a self portrait, not done that for about 40 years - dont worry I dont really look like an odd shaped stick with a dog that looks absolutely nothing like any of mine, or any I know.

So, there you go - finished laughing yet? now how many of you have looked at this and thought they could do better? (aside from Wellydog who we 'know' can) so what are you waiting for? I'm not much good yet, but can certainly only get better and I am having a great time trying.
I do also have my very own art teacher at hand, one of my good friends used to teach art and has asked me to bring my work to her this week, she probably needs a good laugh too, but sure she will give me some valuable pointers. One day when you see my name in lights you might remember this blog post....... (..and I might wake up!)

More Crafting fun

I have learnt some great lessons with my new experiments, one of the first ones was just why artists wear cover alls! after spilling all kinds of things on my clothes. I also learnt which varnish does NOT work, will come to that bit later. Also on Etsy this week I had my first sale to the USA were I learnt all my postage was way out and lost a few quid on that one so then had to spend an hour or so changing all my postal rates.

This week I had a go at papier mache, I had a lot of fun and made more mess than you can imagine, are you ready for this?? cant see me making my fortune here just yet, but here are my first efforts ready to paint.

Finished laughing yet? I felt I had made some great progress with my other clay work, till I varnished and first took off the gold paint, and then had the wrong brush so you may be able to see were the bristles fell off too! not my most succesful of days.

I will treat you to my clay christmas decorations in my next blog, I took before photo's to show them raw. Despite my enjoyment of their creation I do feel they will end up on Mum's Christmas tree this year. After painting those today I created my very first artwork, I then stuck it to the fridge for OH to see, he is threatening to frame it, saying it will be worth a fortune when I am rich and famous... not so sure about that one, but cant tell you how much I enjoy painting - cant wait to do some more, but dont worry I may well keep the future ones to myself or inflict them on the family as Christmas pressies. Without further adue here is SimJaTa's very first piece of artwork........

LOL, sure I made at least one of you smile - or perhaps choke on your coffee, sorry about that!

Too many hours crafting today has resulted in severe neck ache, so I am now off to heat up another wheat bag, I have had requests for those for Christmas so may well be better off making some more of those, if nothing else I have plenty of use for them myself. Good excuse for a glass or two of the red stuff too.

New Crafting Experience

Seen here are my very first atempts at trying to put down what is in my head to then transfer to the clay work, now be gentle with me its a very long time since I held a pen, and an artist I am not. But with great enthusiasm I started to paint them onto ACEO size with the idea they might be absract ACEO's, LOL maybe not.. I wanted to create some keyrings and brooches, but seem to be creating (as well as a mess) pendants and earrings too.

I'm afraid even I was not brave enough to show off my first two attempts at clay work, seen here is attempt number '3' I am currently working with different clay forms even papier mache all of which are taking an age to dry out, so no painting has started on the next lot yet, so not too sure how they will turn out. Believe me I am gettting better each time. Luckily I do live by the motto 'if you cannot laugh at yourself what can you do' so here we go, you better sit down...........

This one is 'meant' to be a flower pendant.

I would like to say this was my first attempt at lettering, but it was infact my third and still not quite got the hang of it.

Happy Flowers, I think they would be more effective multi coloured really.

Here they are together, with the complete disasters taken away. You see I do still need a bit more practice, not to mention some more hours in the day to do so. But I am really enjoying this, highly recommended if you were to need a relaxing craft. Even the ever suffering husband has commented how happy I am in my little world of clay and paint.

Inspiration

If you have been reading this blog you will know I have been trying to get to grips with clay, still nothing worth showing off (trust me) but I am loving trying, and determined to get there soon. Last few days I have been doing an awful lot of research to try get to grips with exactly what I am trying to achieve - when suddenly I came across a link from Gelert Design which summed it up exactly, more hours spent on research and I think I have it.
I contacted Dave to thank him and he was very kind and supportive, so I thought today only appropriate to show off what he can do.

Gelert Design was one of my very first purchases when I joined Folksy, I bought one of these pendants for my daughter the Christmas before last, she still wears it.

Not just pendants and brooches, but you can also find tea-light holders like this, very original and great work.

I think this is amazing, the beginning of the description says..

A beautiful piece of celtic sculpture for your wall.

Based on a drawing by renowned celtic artist Courtney Davis (used with permission), this plaque depicts two entwined figures, their knotwork hair becoming the heads of hounds - symbols of fidelity in celtic lore.

100 SALES!!!

That made you look didnt it? wish I could say it was me, but alas no. (or at least not yet) This afternoon my team on Etsy 'Crafty Folk' clocked up 100 sales for their daily listing club for October, and its only the 17th. As a team we are very proud of this, as we are quite new and many of us have only been on Etsy for a month or so. Its a great team to be part of and we are growing daily, plenty of support for each other and the important promotion, infact again today I was added to a superb treasury which all helps to be noticed on such a vast selling platform.

Speaking of which I do find myself in a dilema about whether or not to stay on Folksy at all, I am so disheatened with it. More talented shops are closing each day due to the new rules which keep appearing at random, with the exception of some of the remaining sellers the forum isnt a very nice place to be, so much confusion of what is allowed and what is not? I know it doesn't affect me (so far) but the treatment of so many hard working crafters so close to the best selling time of the year cant help but make one think...

Must stop waffling and get to the point, whilst trying to think of who to feature from the team I decided to show off the most recent new members, so are some of them. Not a handbag in sight, but more resin adventures

I did 'sort of' finish these at weekend, but only just got around to photographing. My latest progress report on the resin adventures, it has come to a bit of a standstill at the moment as I was awaiting some non-toxic resin to arrive. Also being the impatient person I am while I was waiting I went and purchased some clay and paints, have been working with that for a while, my first attempts are even more amusing than the resin, might photograph them another day to raise a smile or two, all a learning process but I am really enjoying some new challenges. Meanwhile I am still adding to my new Etsy shop, so dont forget that and joining in with my new team the Crafty Folk.

I made these for my friend Sylvia with her dog Zac on them. She is a pink person so they have been added to raspberry pink to suite her style. As you can see one of my first lessons is how to get the photograph to be a perfect round, I think I have found the right gadget for this for next time.

This one is for my friend Sian, with her Kelpie dog 'Tigger' as Sian is not really much of a jewellery person I made this one into a keyring for her. Again, I realise I need to work at these circles, but I think he sits quite well in here for a first attempt.

A range of necklaces here - spot the purple one, thats one of mine of course. The first dog is my Aunts rescue dog 'Sophie' the Staffie, the others are my own dogs, I am wearing Tess and Alfie on purple now, one of my favourites, yes I know the circles are far from perfect but I am happy to be wearing my dogs, and sure Auntie will like her Sophie.

I made some more teardrop pendants, and even added some necklace bails on some of them. This time I did suffer from an attack of the bubbles, which again need some work, and I also need some polish to shine them up a bit more.

I also learnt another valuable lesson about wearing gloves at all times with resin, even if you 'think' it might be dry enough to mess with it isnt! so lesson learnt to put gloves on again when taking box off the top to have a look, as if you drop one its then your instinct to pick it up, this is not a good idea without gloves. Oh and another one, to watch were you are mixing and take more care.

Crafty Folk on Etsy

Since joining Etsy I have been lucky enough to have found the best team there, we have lots to do and spend our time as well as promoting ourselves - promoting each other. Our Team Leader 'Lillys night Garden' also was kind enough to start us up a daily list club, we are now on day 4 and enjoying viewing our new sparkly items and showing all on Facebook and Twitter, certainly keeps us out of mischief.

SimJaTa enters the world of Resin

Well, SimJaTa enters the world of Resin rather slowly. After a couple of weeks of research I ordered some kit, and waited for the nerve to begin.

Yes, they dont look too bad, but they were the better ones. My first attempt taught me an awful lot of lessons, but then I suppose that is the idea to learn by your first mistakes, but what a lot of them!

Now, I 'think' the biggest one was the weather, it was just sooooooooooo hot that the instructions I followed were not the same for tropical conditions, especially those we are certainly NOT used to here in the UK.

Are you ready for a laugh? here is what 'really' happened..

As you can see a catalogue of errors there. I did debate on whether or not to show you, but on my quest to learn I managed to pick up a new cyber buddy called Wendy who is also starting out in the world of resin, and probably so she can laugh her socks off at me she thought it was a good idea to show my beginnings, in the hope that as (IF) I get better the difference will show.

If I ever get good enough at this, I might make some brooches for sale in my Etsy shop but anything else will probably remain off line, as I do have an awful lot of potential customers already, everyone I have spoken to about this wants one - no pressure then! Just hoping if they are thinking Christmas gifts they might be happy to wait for Christmas 2012 as at this rate this year is looking pretty unlikely.

Still, I am told it is good for the mind to learn new skills - or is that more people I know who just like a good laugh? I am currently preparing for my next attempt, but thinking of waiting for the cooler weather this time (should be this week then!)

New Weekly Feature

Sorry, I seem to have been a bad blogger again. Dont know what happened really, I just got total block, couldnt think of a thing to waffle on about, how unlike me! Cant even blame being busy this week as since the shock of the totally unseasonal heat landed not been able to manage much at all, I did list a brand new patchwork bag in my new Etsy shop (see right) but not been able to settle to much else, even the new project has been on the back burner.
Never mind though, according to our ever reliable weather forcast (!) it will be the start of winter on Tuesday..

Today I am starting a new weekly feature from my Etsy team 'Crafty Folk' now Lillysnightgarden has explained in terms for a 3 year old so I can understand I might even get it right next time. The idea is we have one of us featured for the week and we each do a treasury with that person featured and choose a theme to add others too. So I thought I would add to that and do a weekly blog feature of the chosen one too.

Latest Custom Order

Fortunatly things are still ticking over nicely off line, here is my latest order a very special one as its for one of our group of dog walkers. His name is Trevor and he is owned by this lovely lurcher Woody, you can read more about Woody soon here

of course the bag is not for Trevor, wouldnt really suit him, but for his partner, I am hoping she likes it as its a surprise gift she will be receiving tomorrow.

Not much time for blogging at the moment, firstly I am to be learning a new craft which I have been busy researching you will be hearing more on that one. Lets hope its more successful that my hat making attempts (remember them?) but I will be sure to show you the failures as well as the hopeful successes, the idea is going down a storm with my contacts and I already have 2 firm orders and not even started yet.

Secondly I am spending far too much time on Etsy, not just transfering my shop there but also busy chatting in my teams, I am really enjoying the new friends I am making over there. I even managed to curate my first treasury this week, though it did take me about 3 days. Hope to try another over the weekend, I loved doing that too, must say I am finding Etsy a lot of fun so much to learn and just so vast, with so many lovely things to look at and make up for future shopping and gift ideas.

For today I would like to support some of the sellers who joined in with 'supporting handmade however its made' you can link directly to this cause from the same logo on the right of my page.
In short, the rules on Folksy changed and some of the jewellery and items you see below are not longer welcome there, others have shown their support by closing their shops for a week, but dont worry they will be open very soon. Without wanting to put a dampener on all our wonderful creativity things have changed at Folksy and I too will no longer be adding to my shop there, hence opening at Etsy. My own shop is still open at Folksy for the time being, especially as we have a fabulous the fabulous CRAFTfest event due soon which I will tell you about in my next post.

Such a shame to see the closeknit community split but the majority of us remain friends and contiune to share our support though many now face a new direction. SimJaTa bounces onto Etsy

Well, not so much of a bounce but perhaps a little soft jog. About time I explored other avenues, not to mention the support of some of my fellow 'crafters' who have also decided to explore further.

Dream Design Achieve

Dream, Design, Achieve - what a fantastic motto to live by, I am wearing this round my neck too. Above is my lastest bag design, some of you may already know I did try to become a little more conservative with my designs.. But I woke up this week and realised this is not me, and not what I want to do. I want to be bright, loud and noticed, and hopefully others out there do too and therefore will enjoy the bright and loud.
It occured to me (again whilst dreaming) this is how I started, and impatience told me it didnt work, but looking back it did. My very first custom order on Folksy was from a lovely lady called Liz Dyson, you can find her supplies shop here:

Liz requested a loud bag, so we set to work and achieved this one - turned out to be not quite what she wanted.. which was great as we got to try again..

As you will see this bag sold too, to the lovely Wenona from "Nithria Craft" you can find her shop here:

The next creation was just right, and loud enough for Liz, I have no idea why I dropped the 'Loud Liz' title, again perhaps inpatience on my part as this one has had a lot of interest on Flickr and proved popular, so why did I not stick to these and what I enjoyed the most? Here is Liz's Loud Bag

I wonder if Liz realises how much inspiration she was? I did create a few other rather loud bags and thinking about it now they all sold too. Starting on Monday there will be more bright loud bags, and why not? Also this wonderful motto "Dream Design Achieve" will be available at my other shop 'Special by SimJaTa' as brooches, keyrings and bagcharms as I think we all need to share this.

If you are out there designing and dreaming and swapping and changing STOP - enjoy what you do. A wise man once told me about photography to enjoy it, this reflects though in the pictures - therefore same must apply with our designs. Remember to enjoy what you do and create from the heart.

Leave of Absence

Just a quicky to explain the quietness from Bags of Swank by SimJaTa and Special by SimJaTa over the next few days. Starting today really...

We have our WoofBeginnings
fund raiser this weekend. Set up our stall tomorrow (Friday) then ready for the Town and Country Fair in Southport for Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Also our agility team are attending so Alfie will be performing, and maybe Jaja depending on just how brave we are feeling.

Today I have been sorting out the tombola prizes, so far we have managed 150 prizes for each of the days, so I have done day 1 and folding up over 1,000 raffle tickets and sticking on tickets, then packing up the boxes - didnt take too long, only the best part of 8 hours!! I very much doubt I will be seeing much of a sewing needle till Tuesday, or maybe Wednesday, feels very strange not to be working - but I suppose its a forced break and lets me come back all nice and refreshed ready for new designs. I will be missing out on Folksy Friday and Handmade Monday, so hope to read and catch up next week.

Luckily I have got ahead with the brooches so can start listing more of those in my other shop - Special By SimJaTa, like this one listed yesterday

Our main worry for the weekend is of course the weather, usually v.good for August bank holiday, but not looking so promising this time - Ali, if you are reading this perhaps you can send that prayer off to the weather gods again? As you know a weekend of hanging on to tent poles really is not ideal, and tombola tickets are really not so good in wind and rain.

Its Handmade Monday!

Its handmade Monday time and only my second, I enjoyed it so much last week and met some fabulous new crafters. More importantly though after all this time the lovely Wendy at 1stUniqueGifts who organises all this for us taught me how to do a clicky link, so huge thanks to Wendy who can be found here 1stuniquegifts along with all the other talented crafters who join in with handmade Monday.

Today I am going to talk about quilting, I so admire all those talented quilters who make such fantastic works of art, so much time goes into each piece and the results are amazing. Just for your amusement, here is my very first attempt from last year.

One day I will find the time to start on a real quilt, though I often think I just use the lack of time thing as an excuse. I have all the quilting needs, my Mums friend in Wales was an amazing quilter it was her life, sadly she lost her sight and could no longer continue, she was more than happy to give me all her collection in the hope one day I would learn. I will do one day.
I often visit the exhibitions just to look and admire this craft, and have a few magazines. To begin with I raided the library of all their books, there are plenty there for anyone like me who would love to start.

Last week as a bit of a cheat I had a go at some bags, by quilting the dogs on them, the idea was to give them a 3D appearance on the bags and to keep my hand in so I dont forget, I do think maybe I should have used a different colour thread though but still I enjoyed doing it.

So that was my week, wonder what this week will bring?

Folksy Friday, Best Talented A-Listers

Friday already? who did that, surely we havent moved passed Monday yet? goodness me, time goes so quickly.

As I have only done one blog post this month on the A-Listers this weeks Folksy Friday better be then, these are the very hard working Folksy members who try to list one of their fabulous items each day (or near enough), so please do take a look by clicking on the picture and being transported to the rest of the shop of wonders and temptations, all more than worthy on new homes..its Friday, you need a treat!!!

This is a stunning necklace, wait till my Mum sees it, she loves owls. Again not something you see on the mass produced shelves, Turquoise Owl by "Mary Elliott"

I just love all the items in this shop, from "Vintage Dreams" today are a set of shabby chic gift tags to brighten up your gifts

Lastly, from my other shop SimJaTa2 (link to the side of page) the last in this type of brooches, my new creations will be in the shop very soon - and OH is slowly working on a new website for them too, I just need to find a few more hours to get some new designs made. Rescue Dogs

I have been happy to observe recently that many of us crafters are also animal lovers, be it dogs like me and cats. So todays wafflings are on the rescue dog. The above photo shows four dogs from this mornings walkies, can you spot the rescue ones? no, of course not they are all dogs having fun. Zac the golden retriver (rescue), Alfie the black labrador (rescue) and their pals Charlie the mad yellow labrador and Bailey the darker golden retriever.

Here is our Jaja, looking so adoringly at my friend Sylvia - not because he loves her, but he does love her pocket of gravy bones. Jaja was adopted from Swindon Strictly Strays 8 years ago as a puppy, his Mum was rescued by them expecting a litter, Jaja was one of that litter, infact the largest of that litter. He has been a lucky dog, never known anything but love throughout his life.

This is our Alfie, adopted 31st October 2009 after a relationship breakup. Alfie did arrive with us with one or two 'issues' we are still getting there, he is ok with most dogs now, but still needs a little work. He does attend classes each week, along with agility, flyball and scent work to keep his brain working and keep him out of trouble the rest of the time.

Tess came to us from Labrador Rescue 9 years ago, she was a failed gundog who had then been homed to a delightful family (not) who beat her, she is still a nervous dog at times, sometimes you cannot remove the past no matter how you try. Tess is now around 11 years old but still enjoys playing with the younger dogs.

Zac, is my friend Sylvia's dog, he is from Retriever rescue. Also a very nervous dog with many an issue, he is quite happy as long as he is in familiar surroundings and with his friends, but reverts back to his nerves in strange places. His Mum no longer has holidays as Zac couldnt cope with them.

Last night I was looking here ManyTears
at the many dogs needing homes, heartbraking to see so many unwanted dogs. I may well have been lucky enough to find one a home with a local lady who was looking for a minature poodle having lost hers to old age earlier in the year, so thats one lucky dog out of so many.
Many Tears are one of the rescues my own organisation help to support, as well as crafting I am also area co-ordinator, and one of the founders of Woof Beginnings,
WoofBeginnings
we raise funds to help rescue dogs. Currently working towards our next show at the end of the month, collecting as many donations of prizes for our quality tombola as we can.

Handmade Monday, My first attempt

I have often read about 'Handmade Monday' but not fully understood what it was all about, I have just seen Haptree's blog on CraftUK and decided to have a go. Still not quite sure were I am meant to link it too? but do understand no shop links and chat about craft and latest makes be they good or bad...
Well, as some of you know I am really a bag maker, but do enjoy other crafting too. I noticed many of our customers like something a bit more reasonably priced to treat themselves too, so had the idea to make brooches - it didnt start so well..

I have listed some brooches, but they often turned out way too big so became keyrings and bag charms instead, but some as the one above and this did not make it to the shop, I just wasnt getting it!

Improving slightly, I am aware its my outline that just isnt right - so tried this one, still not quite sure the magic is quite there though?

During the weekend I had a new idea, long long ago when time began I used to make jewellery, I still have some left in a drawer so thought I would try a spot of remaking and turn the old jewellery into brooches, now these I like...I may well be the only one, who knows? but I am happy with my first two attempts at flower brooches - although the light is not really my friend this morning but hopefully you get the idea.

So, there you have it. SimJaTa's move into the land of the handmade brooch, you may wish to watch this space and by next Monday I may have improved. I have spent an awful lot of hours trying, and more hours will be spent this week too - alongside the next bag I am 'meant' to be hand quilting, anyone found out were those extra hours in the day are hiding yet?

In Memory of a special lady

Some of you may remember my previous post about my friend, the post was 'life is for living'. Today we said goodbye to my friend Michele Bimpson. Above is a picture of her beloved boy Digby who passed to Rainbow Bridge some years back with many of her four legged friends she is now reunited with. I struggled with what to write today for her, and decided the best thing was to share this poem with you, dedicated today to Michele.

Rescue Rainbow Bridge Poem

Unlike most days at Rainbow Bridge, this day dawned cold and gray, damp as a swamp and as dismal as could be imagined. All of the recent arrivals had no idea what to think, as they had never experienced a day like this before. But the animals who had been waiting for their beloved people knew exactly what was going on and started to gather at the pathway leading to The Bridge to watch.

It wasn't long before an elderly animal came into view, head hung low and tail dragging. The other animals, the ones who had been there for a while, knew what his story was right away, for they had seen this happen far too often.

He approached slowly, obviously in great emotional pain, but with no sign of injury or illness. Unlike all of the other animals waiting at The Bridge, this animal had not been restored to youth and made healthy and vigorous again. As he walked toward The Bridge, he watched all of the other animals watching him. He knew he was out of place here and the sooner he could cross over, the happier he would be.

But, alas, as he approached The Bridge, his way was barred by the appearance of an Angel who apologized, but told him that he would not be able to pass. Only those animals who were with their people could pass over Rainbow Bridge.

With no place else to turn to, the elderly animal turned towards the fields before The Bridge and saw a group of other animals like himself, also elderly and infirm. They weren't playing, but rather simply lying on the green grass, forlornly staring out at the pathway leading to The Bridge. And so, he took his place among them, watching the pathway and waiting.

One of the newest arrivals at The Bridge didn't understand what he had just witnessed and asked one of the animals that had been there for a while to explain it to him.

You see, that poor animal was a rescue. He was turned in to rescue just as you see him now, an older animal with his fur graying and his eyes clouding. He never made it out of rescue and passed on with only the love of his rescuer to comfort him as he left his earthly existence. Because he had no family to give his love to, he has no one to escort him across The Bridge.

The first animal thought about this for a minute and then asked, "So what will happen now?" As he was about to receive his answer, the clouds suddenly parted and the gloom lifted. Approaching The Bridge could be seen a single person and among the older animals, a whole group was suddenly bathed in a golden light and they were all young and healthy again, just as they were in the prime of life.

"Watch, and see" said the second animal. A second group of animals from those waiting came to the pathway and bowed low as the person neared. At each bowed head, the person offered a pat on the head or a scratch behind the ears. The newly restored animals fell into line and followed him towards The Bridge. They all crossed The Bridge together.

"What happened?"

"That was a rescuer." The animals you saw bowing in respect were those who found new homes because of his work. They will cross when their new families arrive. Those you saw restored were those who never found homes. When a rescuer arrives, they are allowed to perform one, final act of rescue. They are allowed to escort those poor animals that they couldn't place on earth, across The Rainbow Bridge.

"I think I like rescuers," said the first animal.

"So does GOD," was the reply.

Beautiful Scents for us Beautiful People

Yesterday I was totally side tracked from everything. The nice old chap who provides me with my lavender for sachets brought me a cutting of 'lemon geranium', I immediatly fell in love with this scent and spent most of the day searching to find more and looking to see what I can do with the leaves. I now have a stack of lavender, geranium and other flowers drying out to make myself and maybe the family some popuri - no wonder I never have any free time.

During my search I of course found myself on Folksy, were there are no less than 91 pages of homemade soap, and what a fantastic selection - so you lucky people are about to see some of my favourites I discovered in my search.

First of all is 'Handmade Soap by Caroline' as she actually had the scent I was looking for alongside another 2 I could choose, so I chose the patchouli and orange for me, and another one for my friend so I can share my wonderful find. As you see, its not just about soap making, but the fantastic presentation and service, my soaps will be with me tomorrow, and I cant wait.

Next is this special lady from 'Scrub up Lovely' who helped me out with a soap for my psorisis, and has others to help with varying skin conditions, here is a lovely citrus blend she has on offer, but I also had to include her chocolate and swirl as it was such a lovely photo.

This one is just a work of art, what a lovely gift for someone special, 'Bennington handmade soap' has this adorable cupcake soap rose garden

The next one really amused me, I walk a dog called Bailey and the picture on the front is just like one of my own dogs, its a special natural doggie soap, and is on my favourites list for Bailey for Christmas. Its from 'Just Bev Soaps'

One here for those with sensitive skin, from 'Handmade Luxury Soap' a fabulous creation for those with skin issues to still have something lovely.

Aromatherapy ~ Folksy Friday

Oh dear, I dont seem to be finding so much time to keep up with the blogging these days, thats due to having far too much fun with the crafts I am working on. I did have a distraction this week though, my friend treated me to a tarte burner and a well known brand of tartes/melts to go with it. These magical frangrances have my house smelling delicious and have a very relaxed and happy SimJaTa busy working in such fabulous aroma's. BUT as we all know 'handmade is best' so I set toward the Folksy forum to see what was on offer, and got some fantastic recommendations, seems our talented Folksy crafters can quite easily out-do the well known candle company with the most amazing fragrances - I have mine on order from Folksy now and cannot wait to receive them.

Therefore, let me introduce you to what is on offer on Folksy, great fragrance, great prices and top class service.

Highly recommened to me was Pauline's Candles, I am currently a fan of the melts but this wonderful gift set is on my wish list an Aromatherapy set.

'Over the Rainbow' was also recommeneded, how cool are these? Essential Aromas wax melts

'One stop pamper shop' also on the list, and a great help to me in making my choices which I can hardly wait to arrive. Here are her fabulous Love Heart melts, which come in a variety of scents.

'Scratchycat Candles' has some wonderful choices in her shop, these sound very appealing "Rhubarb and Raspberry soy wax melts"

Brooches, Keyrings and Bag Charms

Further to my last blog post, yes sorry it has been over a week! As usual just not enough hours in the day and many things outside of craft studio have been getting in the way.
Every available minute has been spent trying to conquer textile designs. The pictures above are 2 new ones ready to list in my "Special by SimJaTa" shop - link on the right. I am enjoying this challenge so much its all I want to be doing, I feel myself becoming quite frustrated when so many things get in the way. I am still working on bags alongside these designs, and these too are taking a new approach with some quilting, applique, patchwork designs and new ideas.

Folksy Friday - The handmade brooch

If you read yesterday's blog you will know I have been trying to create my own textile brooches with my own theme, which I have decided will be handbags to fit in with my main craft.

I would today like to introduce you to my inspiration of the textile brooch, from the fabulous crafters on Folksy. Be sure to click on the pictures as they too create other superb items alongside their brooches.

"PantsandPaper" is one of the most popular and has her own fantastic individual style, I just love watching out for what she does next each day. Here is just one from her fabulous collection.

"Buttercup Boutique" is another talent I admire, so much so I purchased one of her lovely creations as a christmas gift for my Mum last year, here is one of her lovely little birds.

"Nofkantscurios" is one of our talented embroidery people, my own embroidery not yet in this league but maybe one day, here is her Magpie brooch

"Lynwoodcrafts" does not just embroidery but felting too to create this wonderful scenary, simply breathtaking, here is her meadow flower brooch

The next two sellers I discovered whilst looking at brooches, I thought this one a great individual talent so had to include "Nadine arborthot adornment" and one of her lovely beaded embroidery pieces

Lastly, but by no means least another new discovery by me, a great shop with other talents too "MarmaladeRose" and one of her lovely fabric brooches

Whats new at SimJaTa?

OK, first of all bare with me, I have tried to put the photo's on the left - so you can look at what I am waffling on about as I go, but its all jumbled up as I write so cant tell what is where.

First of all should be my newest bag design, having decided I wanted to do some beaded quilting I discovered (the hard way) that you cannot rag quilt a beaded bag as all the beads loose their colour in the washing machine. So, had to go for patchwork quilting, with some embroidery and bead work - quite pleased with the result on my first attempt.

Then,I wanted to try textile brooches, so many lovely ones for sale on Folksy and had to be sure I constructed my own design, so here is the first one - in the shape of a handbag, rather appropriate to me being "Bags of Swank" I thought.

Landing in the wrong order is a close up of the little garden patch I created on the bag, I really enjoyed this and have been busy purchasing some more little beads and flowers to add to bags and maybe brooches in the future.

Whilst designing one of the squares I came across this lace, and thought together with some purple velvet and a few beads it might make a rather unusual glasses case, so this is what then appeared.

The last glasses case (I really hope this writing is somewhere near each picture) was my having another play with textile design and beadwork, using a variety of fabrics and lined with sari silks a new quilted design was created.

Lastly, the green patchwork number I showed you earlier in the blog was added to my shop today - you can find it by clicking on the photo which goes direct to my shop, I was thrilled to see earlier it had collected a couple of favourites, so hopefully at least 2 people out there like it so far

My new items should start to appear on Folksy from the weekend, as rather a busy schedule planned for tomorrow with no spare time for listing. I hope you like them, as I have had a lot of enjoyment designing them.

Life is for living

I was meant to be blogging today all about my new makes, still not listed but made none the less. But something changed that today....

See the photo of one of my dogs here Alfie, Alfie has hip dysplasia and Spikes Disease, but while he can he is still living life to the full and enjoying each day. Something we can all learn from Alfie.
My friend from outside the UK phoned me this morning, (some of you know her on my twitter account, which I joined so we can chat - so I will not name her here) She has been suffering from Cancer for some time and yesterday was told she now has weeks left. Not a huge surprise as we said our goodbyes earlier in the year when she was in the UK.
If I have been taught anything from my friend it is how important it is to live each day to the full, and not to let the silly (and I mean SILLY) daily niggles infringe on your day, on my walk with Alfie and the others this morning I noticed how important this lesson is.

I have missed my friend for years since she moved away, and above all I find it so unfair why such a fabulous person who would do anything she could for anyone and devoted her life to help animals can be taken from us so young. Perhaps her love and kindness is needed elsewhere, something none of us can know for sure.

If you have managed to read through this, dont be sad for her and certainly not for me......... but remember to live your life to the full, and make each day count.

New Design ~Work in progress

Here is a new one for me, some work in progress.. as it will take me some time to get this finished thought you might like to take a look at how things take shape. I am hoping this will be fabulous when its done, but remember my first attempt at the raggy bag? so who knows, lets see how it pans out during the week (or so)

I started off by selecting some fabric, decided to go for green's, with the zillion and one boxes in my craft room to go at this took some time.
So,fabric selected off to the iron to press the fronts and backs. Then (and here is were I really wish I actually did do any maths at school) cut all the batting to fit inside each fabric sandwich.
The first of the new bit, some fancy quilting done on each piece of fabric - must say this was a fun part too, hope you can see on the pictures once it was all laid out to be almost bag shaped.
Then all sewn together to actually 'be' bag shaped.

Still a very long way to go, most of the bits I need I am now at the mercy of the postman to fetch them so that could slow things down. I still have the handle to decide on, and made a decision on fastners which of course I didnt have any of so just ordered them too, again to begin that wait for the postman.

Tomorrow I am going to practice some embellishments for this bag, and for others in the future.

I just hope I can achieve the designs that are in my head, and that they will be loved as much as I enjoy creating them.

I will update my blog with the finished article when its ready, but I wouldnt hold your breath, may well be next weekend.

Folksy Friday ~ Talented Quilters

As I have caught this quilting bug (although mine are the raggy variey not quite as smart as these) I thought this week I would share just some of the talent on Folksy from the quilters there. Be sure to click on these pictures for futher details and a good look around each shop of lovelies.
You may think some of these items are a bit pricey, but the quality of workmanship is amazing, and the hours it takes to create these original beauties you would not believe. Talent and heaps of patience goes into this art.

This one is just amazing, done in my style of raggy quilting, but a large design make a great throw for the sofa - needs to be shown off in full glory, by "Helen Jane's Designs"

Raggy Quilt Bags by SimJaTa

Slight exageration in the title, but I do have one here ready to go on sale tomorrow. With major thanks to Jane at "Old Friendship Crafts" (seen in last blog post, do take a look!)my second attempt far surpassed the first.

Cant say I am getting that much quicker at it though, it took me 2 hours to cut the fringing all the way around the squares and top. I have added my own lining and raggy pocket this time too, and even remembered to pop in a Bags of Swank by SimJaTa label, must have been an omen on the last bag as I forgot that bit..

Thats it for now though, I managed a new tote bag today which will go on sale on Sunday (hopefully) as I dont have time to sort out the pictures. This is one of a limited edition of 6 only.

Tomorrow is a usual Friday so rather busy, but thrown into the equation is also a visit to the dentist - YUK. Also preparation for Saturdays fund raiser for Woof Beginnings, so I have about 2,000 raffle tickets to fold up and all the tombola prizes to attatch labels too, and boy do I have a lot of prizes. Unfortunatly I will therefore not manage a Folksy Friday this week, but will try make my next blog one for the Folksy "June Bugs".

SimJaTa Explores a new skill

RAGGY EDGE QUILTING

Inspired by one of the Folksy Seller "Old Friendship Crafts" who I will show you later - how it SHOULD be done..

I set out to finally, after a long time of wishing to try, make a start. I think it may well need a bit more practice dont you? Sure is time consuming to begin with, if (which of course it isnt) this bag had proved good enough to sell for the hours I spent creating it would have cost over £50!!!
I began, as shown in the pictures by sorting out my fabrics and squares, then put them all together in something that resembled a bag and chopped up all the seams - before wash I was not so impressed. The last picture of the bag having been washed, shook, and tumble dried as you see is not much better. Luckily I have had some expert help since and I am already half way through bag number 2 that just 'has' to be better doesnt it?
Oh, as you can see mistake number one was using four squares across - should be 3 or 5 so there is a centre to attatch the fastener. I wont go into the rest of the errors or we will be here all night...

So much so she well deserves a mention and highlight of her shop so you can see how the experts do it, and what can be achieved. Bags of Swank ~ Almost a Day off

As mentioned earlier in blog, today was the day to visit one of my outlets with some more stock. What a chore this is - NOT. We were so lucky today as the weather turned out good for us too. First of all we were ruthlessly attacked by ducklings trying to eat our trainers, the ones in the photo had decided to try my husbands shoes as mine were not tasty enough. Just how cute are they?
We manouvered over to the bird tables, as on our last visit I managed to capture some great shots, today this too was taken over by ducks, but what a lovely specimen she is.
We didnt see that much else, except in on of the hides a lovely chap let me view his mega lense and watch the herons right across the pond too far for the eye to see, but I got to watch 3 of them pruning their feathers and relaxing in the sunshine. Again the kingfisher was elusive, but I did see a photo of one of the young whilst in the shop - would love to have seen the real thing, but alas not today, but then it was a bit busy and the visiting children were a bit rowdy.

The lovely Robin posed beautifully for us, sadly too much in the sun for the camera's to capture him too well, but this is the best we got between us taken by husband Steve.

Luckily the wild flowers keep nice and still for me, so I took this shot of something that cant fly away!

Before our adventures at Mere Sands we had been out to lunch with Mum and Dad, so lucky enough to have a fantastic day, ok so I was working for some of it, but this is one of my real perks of my job getting to spend a few hours here.

Hoping to have a full day of work tomorrow, arranged to meet with my friend early on the dog walk so hoping to have time to crack a new skill I have been working on, fingers crossed.

New Stock for Mere Sands

I was lucky enough to receive a cheque from Lancashire Wildlife Trust at weekend for the sale of my bags in our (almost) local Nature Reserve at 'Mere Sands' which of course was brilliant news as they had sold my bags, but also meant I had to get busy and make some more. Above are a couple of the ones I have ready so far - planning on our visit for Sunday.
Mere Sands Nature Reserve is a wonderful place, so quiet and peaceful with plenty to see, as long as you have the patience to wait, particularly the kingfisher can be rather shy. For further details there is a link on my website.

Has meant I have struggled a bit to keep up with the Folksy 'June Bugs Daily listing club' but at least I am being kept nice and busy. I have also searched and found all the fabric and extra's for my next set of bags, should be popular with the dog lovers. I have also neglected my Special by SimJaTa shop, hope to remedy that one soon - have some simply gorgeous fabrics for silky scarves, as we do not appear to be having a roasting hot summer so far, so they should still be popular.

As usual I do struggle with never enough hours in the day, so if these two bags from my shop are still there at weekend, they may well be finding themselves in the Mere Sands shop. These pictures do connect to my shop, just click on them and they will take you there (at least until Saturday).

Healthy Eating

I decided to have a break from crafting waffle today, just for a change - normal service will be resumed soon. Take a look at this picture (above) how appetising does that look? yummy right? nooooooooooooooooo. This is what my friend Sylvia has me taking daily in my morning fruit juice. She told me all about it, then force fed it to me (well, slight exageration she brought me some in a jar).

This super food is SPIRULINA. To save me trying to tell you here is some information I just copied from "Wisegeek.com"

Spirulina is a blue-green, one-celled form of algae that thrives in warm, alkaline fresh bodies of water such as lakes and ponds. It has a long history of being used for human consumption for its many health benefits. Over the years, spirulina has nourished the citizens of Africa, Asia, and South America. The Mayas and the Aztecs used the algae as a central part of their diet. Today, spirulina is consumed by health conscious people all over the world.

Spirulina is popular with health buffs because it packs such a potent nutritional punch. This algae weighs in with an impressive 60% all-vegetable protein, and also contains a powerful combination of important vitamins and minerals such as iron, vitamin E, zinc, B-complex, copper, calcium, and magnesium. It is also a rich source of the antioxidant beta-carotene and the essential fatty acid gamma linolenic acid (GLA). In other words, spirulina is one heck of an algae.

Spirulina also contains very little calories, sugar, or starch. The average 500 mg tablet of spirulina contains only one to two calories. It does offer some carbohydrates in the form of rhamnose and glycogen, both of which are easily absorbed by the human body. Thus, the sugars found in spirulina can provide a quick, healthy energy boost.

Spirulina is easy to find in pill or powder form. Although there are no known toxicities associated with spirulina, it is always best and safest to talk with a health care provider before taking any nutritional supplement.

You can find lots of information on google about its benefits. But if you did decided to give it a try dont blame me when you discover it does actually taste appauling. I have found the best mix to be in Cranberry and Raspberry juice. It has amazed me finally doing some research into foods that are very good for you, so I felt so much better today with my salad, including healthy lettuce and celery. So much so I can even really enjoy my nice healthy glass of red wine later (as part of my 5 a day of course).
I do believe a varied diet to be the best, so here at SimJaTa we are not all Spirulina and salad thats for sure, we still eat plenty of what they say we shouldnt but in moderation.

So, off for that nice glass of the red stuff now, probably with a small amount of chocolate too - really do need to balance these things out!

The June Bugs from Folksy

"June is busting out allover" well, ok it has been for 7 days now, sorry I am a bit late, but been busy with afore mentioned show, which was a success and we managed to raise just short of £360 for Woof Beginnings!!!

A bag for a friend

Those of you who follow my facebook may have already seen the terrible twosome. The black Labrador is my very own Alfie, the Golden Retriever is his best friend in the entire world Zac. When these dogs are together they see nobody else, a very firm friendship.
Of course as a result Zac's Mum and I have been forced to spend a lot of time together on our walks, luckily we get on well too.
Whilst viewing the photo's on my facebook Zac's Mum of course fell upon my bags and told all her contacts about them, which was great for the one's who have a PC - strange as this seems to us Folksy Crafters and indeed bloggers not everyone does.

So, Zac's Mum ordered a bag with the gruesome twosome on - as we have similar tastes the design is up to me, so I designed something I would like, she 'thinks' she is paying for this at weekend, but no chance... On our dog walk today I mentioned how I was struggling for time, what with my business and OH having booked us in at the Southport Fun Fest with Woof Beginnings, at short notice giving me 3 days to sort everything out. I am almost there, with some great people donating prizes for a tombola (yes that can be sorted in one night, I hope as thats tomorrows job), but not so many volunteers to help set up at 8am Saturday morning...infact just me and OH with 2 hours to put up a Gala Tent and set everything up.
So, Zac's Mum not only offered to donate prizes to raise funds for Woof Beginnings but also voluntered to come and help set up - how wonderful is that? So, the bag will be a thank you gift.

I had hoped my next blog to be featuring the Folksy June Bugs and all their wonderful crafts, but the time constraints are making this a bit tricky - I will try steal some time from somewhere but if not, will certainly sort out some features for next week once I recover from the charity event.

Better get back to the table cloth ironing, and sign laminating - then thats me for today, long day ahead tomorrow - and you might not see me over the weekend, show is till 6pm each day and Sunday will be packing up so late night then.

The Silence

Please accept my apologies to the blogs I follow with no comments from me of late!! Seems 'some of us' have a problem on blogger, were we can no longer comment on blogs, this has been looked into by blogger but as of last Tuesday 24th May still no fix available.
I have therefore begun work on a NEW blog on wordpress for Bags of Swank by SimJaTa, due to my lack of technical ability this is prooving to be a bit of a challenge and may well take some time before I announce the new blog, and indeed work out how to showcase the shared talents on Folksy.

With some help from some of the talented people on Folksy who already have some simply splendid blogs on wordpress I am sure I will get there in time, and hope to have a shiny new blog that will hopefully be at least half as good as the ones I have been shown.

'IF' this post does actually work I will continue to update both Bags of Swank by SimJaTa, and the future 'June Bugs' from Folksy on here.

Meanwhile I have been busy with new items on Folksy, and currently working on some custom orders - as always not enough hours in the day to manage the work I would like and work on a new blog.

Here are a couple of my latest items I have enjoyed working on, some new even brighter bags and gadget cases, I have also added some costmetics bags to the Folksy shop.

Goodbye to the bus

No, that wasnt the goodbye. That was last year after getting stuck on the beach, but otherwise my pride and joy, complete with paw prints and bumper stickers for Bags of Swank.
Let me start at the beginnning, at Easter OH had his car written off in a rather nasty accident were he was very lucky to be unharmed. His other car was waiting on repair in the garage proving to be a rather large job, scenario still on going. Then, last weekend my bus (seen above) was vandalised, putting me off the road for a week, and us being a vehicle free household - this in itself caused a lot of difficulties. Move forward to this Saturday, car fixed!! Hurray, I drove it ONCE to go tend to my Mum who has been unwell this weekend. Yesterday the end came, the engine died, the beloved bus is no more.
No, the exercise of walking 4 large dogs on foot is not good for my arthritic knees and back, I usually walk on sand which I can manage fine.

If anyone out there can find a plus side please let me know, as I am really struggling with this just now.

Sorry for the gloomy post, normal service will be resumed in a day or so when I hope to get back to the Folksy Mayhemers and show some goodies.

Happy Handmade birthday Sian

Its my friend Sian's birthday. Hopefully she will like her gifts many with the help of Folksy. I have made the above cosmetics bag, as not only does she like Longhorn Cows (dont ask) but also has a dog and 2 black cats. Inside the bag is some Avon SSS, yes thats not Folksy but much needed for her outdoor work as it acts as a repellant. Also some simply lovely soap, very well presented and from "Earth Kandi" on Folksy, seen here (just click on photo to be taken to shops below)

I also bought myself one, this is called Angel Archangel Zadkiel Soap, and is fabulous, very nice soap and smells amazing - I will be back for more of this soon.

Here is the best bit, my Mum is making a card with this amazing piece of artwork by Audrey's Art, when I put out an appeal for Longhorn Cows on Folksy nobody else could help, but Dawn went off and produced this..

I think I am getting far too addicted to this new club, may be something to do with the warm welcome? Just love watching the new crafts added throughout the day, the hard part is choosing the favourites, I forced myself to choose just 7 today - was not an easy task. SimJaTa joins the Mayhem Club

Sounds very grand doesnt it? Well let me explain. The Mayhem Group is Folksy's daily listing club, they have a new name each month. I am a bit fashionably late I'm afriad it being the 8th of May already, but still better late than never. Must admit although I have watched the group on occasion I never really knew what it was all about, the gist is (thank you again Natalie) you try to list an item each day on the daily thread named on the forum (no penalites if you dont manage it), then you promote it. Via facebook, Twitter and indeed right here on Blogger. First being sure to click on each item in turn to boost the views.

OK, done the listing, done the clicking and done some tweeting, so next is my first blog to show off a few of today's Mayhem listings, but what a tough choice! So many lovely things to choose from, and I can only select a few - so here are my choices for today.

Folksy Friday ~Cosmetics/make up bags

Thank Folksy its Friday! For this week I wanted to show off the rest of the cosmetics bags found on Folksy, so here are my 3 volunteers who were willing to do that. Like bag making in general, cosmetic bags too come in all shapes and sizes ready for that personal preferance.

My first 2 are from Eva B Designs, starting off with a space saving roll out cosmetics bag very handy to pop into your luggage. Then a Retro Cotton make up bag. (dont forget, simply click on the pictures to be taken for further details and to take a look at what else is on offer in each shop)

Inspiration leading to new items by SimJaTa

Today I have introduced a new range to Bags of Swank by SimJaTa. The 'Cosmetic Bag', the one in the above picture has not been listed yet, maybe at weekend - so keep checking.

Never under estimate the power of blogging. I was reading one of my favourite blogs by Uniquely Yours this morning, were she featured 'Bathroom Items' including some fabulous handmade soaps which can also be found on Folksy. I have been really struggling what to get my friend Sian for her birthday next week, whilst trying to support a fellow crafter on Folksy and found some great idea's on that blog. Then, I thought (light bulb moment) I could make her a cosmetics bag to put some items in - why not give it a go? So, I made 2 today and liked them so much I have added one to my shop.

New Designs from SimJaTa

Refreshed from the Bank Holiday outing, Bags of Swank by SimJaTa has been trying some new designs. As much as I love tote bags I must realise not everyone has the desire to cart round the kitchen sink when they leave the house, some people have more sense and use a 'smaller' bag.
So SimJaTa set to work to try create a clutch bag, as you see not quite got there yet but it is still on the drawing board.

The Boho style bag with the Old English Sheepdogs and Bearded Collies started out smaller but grew, I did like the end result though, so this bag will be on sale in the Folksy shop soon.
The second bag is going back to SimJaTa roots, and has been upcycled aside from the vintage Paisley fabric to the flap and sides, the rest of the bag is made from upcycled fabric and handle, the bag charm on the side I found in a drawer from my long gone jewellery making days as I thought this set off the bag nicely. Again, I was happy with the results and this too will be available to purchase in my Folksy shop soon - maybe even this week! So do watch out for that one.

Raring to go today with a clean slate ready to create something different, just a visit to the Post Office to go with the weekends custom order, and another awaiting photograph - a friend of mine was looking at the photo's of her dog on my Facebook page, showed her friend who is now interested in a Custom Bag with her dog on, just shows the power of networking does help (see today's Folksy Blog).

When the going gets tough - its off to the sheep

As the song goes "When the going gets tough - the tough get going" and in our case that is off to visit our fantastic friends and their sheep. What can be better than a tranquil few hours spent away from too many working hours spending quality time with friends and loved ones? So, we took Dad for an outing too, and the grand age of 73 he still has a great time visiting the sheep, last year was the first time he had held a new lamb.
The photo's show Dad cuddling one of the larger lambs, and one of me too (dont get used to that) some of the herd charging towards us for some sheep nuts, one lamb over my shoulder being rather vocal, for something so small sure can belt out some noise.
Nearby are also a couple of nesting swans, this is the cob enjoying a rest from guard duty.

Before this we even ventured out for lunch with Mum and Dad, unfortunatly Mum cant visit the sheep just now as she is unable to walk that distance anymore, but this week she is taking delivery of her brand new 'Granny Wizz machine' so should be able to come with us next time.

Great day off for us all, poor OH has been battling trying to fix the old car in the garage for some transport this week to no avail as yet - day off did him good too, back to it tomorrow for us both (After a nice relaxing dog walk of course).

Hope everyone is enjoying the fine weather, nice and sunny here but rather a strong wind as you can see by the wonderful hair do in the picture.

Folksy Friday ~ Fab Folksy Folk

Slightly different theme this week, those who read my last entry will have seen OH had a quite nasty car accident at weekend. This did affect us a bit more than I let on, the what 'might have beens' haunted me and what did surprise me the most was the reactions of others. First of I would like to thank some of my good friends Paula, Julie and Chris for their support. Also thanks to Mick, Ali and Eva who took the time to comment.
The best surprise was the support from my Folksy Family, in some cases this was more than people I thought were friends, so todays Folksy Friday is a thank you to those special not only talented but very kind people. Next up is Jill who is the 'Card Making Princess' selling fabulous cards and also some card making accessories

Lisa, from 'Infinit Jewellery' creates some special pieces ideal for the brides and for the young people's special Prom, this blue flower heart is one of my favourites in her shop

Next from 'The Sewing Room' Gracie has many choices too, this is one of her Cosmetic Bags she has to tempt you

Another Special someone is 'Diomo Glass' I do know her name, but have always referred to her as 'Diomo'. Just like to also give a warm welcome back to Diomo who has just returned to us at Folksy after a short absence.

Easter Weekend

As you know from my previous post this weekend was spent fund-raising and spreading awareness for Woof Beginnings. Friday was the day to set up, great fun was had trying to erect the new small marquee, especially after working out the instructions did not correspond with the poles in the box, so after a couple of hours of trying the instructions were abadonded and after another couple of hours of trying and help from some of the other stall holders we managed to get the thing resembling how it should. Saturday morning from 8am was setting up which turned out to take much longer than we thought too, so the photo is of it 'almost' done. The good news was despite the strong wind there it stayed for the whole event, and this time no imploding or blowing away. I always enjoy watching the birds of prey, though I am a bit nervous of them - but was brave enough to take a couple of pictures of the babies and the barn owl.

Not the best of amounts raised after 3 long days - we only took £79, but then of course the public do not have the same amount of pennies these days to give out. We did raise awareness and manage to send a few people along to the various rescue's we support in the hope of homing some needy dogs, so thats the main thing.

A dampener on the weekend was OH got his car written off in a nasty crash on Sunday evening, him and Alfie were very lucky and both intact despite the car resembling a banana wrapped around the traffic light it was punted into. Took a good few hours after the paramedics, traffic police and tow truck had sorted it all out, and a visit to A&E to have OH checked over. The car has now been crushed into a box. Certainly focus's the mind toward what is really important in life.

No work done for a few days, though I have picked up a custom order on-line so must be getting on with that today. So I hope nobody minds my just showing of a couple of items at the end of this as a reminder what is available in my shop.

Fun in the Sun

The dogs keep telling me its far too nice to be indoors working. So warm for them out we dash down to the pond and spend more time there for them to keep cool. In today's pictures from earlier in the day, we have my Alfie (the Black Labrador), his best friend Zac (Golden Retriever) and my old girl Tess (yellow labrador), having far too much fun.
By the time the dog walking was done, not much time to squash in the rest of the days chores, and no time left at all to get any work done. I did however manage to list one of the Summer Bags I created yesterday.

Also on the warm summer theme, is the last one listed for the bicycle enthusiast.

Hope you are all enjoying the spell of good weather, I am not really a big fan of it, seen today under a large hat. Not sure when I will get to blog next as its our fund raiser over the weekend for Woof Beginnings, setting up our new marquee on Friday then the show is Saturday, Sunday and Monday, with family tea to enjoy on Sunday evening too, but I guess most people will be out and about enjoying Easter and the forcast good weather. Hopefully in my area they will be at the Town and Country Fair in Southport buying from our stall to help the needy dogs.

Happy Birthday to Me

Its my birthday tomorrow, another year has just flown by. Dont know about you out there but it seems to be true the older you are the faster it seems to fly by.
So today I treated myself from a day off working and had a try at creating some summer tops, not having a clue where to start I had the fool idea I might be able to sell them one day.. or not!
I am clueless with a pattern so started from scratch, the summer flower being my first using some reclaimed duvet fabric, as you see the buttons are a tad on the wonky side, lessons to be learnt there for a start. Not to mention not enough seam allowance so the top wont fit me either.
Top number 2, is made from some 'Tom and Jerry' fabric I had lying around with no use, (as of course we cannot sell Disney due to copyright) so this is of course for me, with yet another wonky button, not tried it yet but it has come out larger than the first attempt so should be good. I have one more metre of fabric to try out then I just might return to the art of bag making.
Speaking of which, here are a couple of my bags available in my Folksy shop.

Not much planned for tomorrow, dog walking which seems to take me over 2 hours these days, then bringing forward my task of making the dog treats for next days class (usually done in the evening), Tuesdays is always take Aunt out for afternoon, then family meal at other Aunties and Cake, hurray!! No cooking or washing up for me tomorrow.

Just too nice for work today

It seems such a long time since we enjoyed a morning like this, so Alfie our rescue Labrador, along with his housemates Tess and Jaja, and his pals Baily, Zac and new friend Woody 'forced' us to take them for a great walk to the cooling pond for some fun.

Alfie's best friend in the world is the light coloured retriever Zac, when these two get together their shared brain cell is lost forever and as you see, fun is the name of the game.

The dogs at play together are my Tess,Alfie, Bailey, Zac and their new pal Woody the Lurcher who until very recently spent 7 months in a kennel at the RSPCA awaiting a new home, at last his has found his own special home along with Trevor and his partner who love him very much and have taught him what being a 'special' boy is all about.

Not much work done so far today, infact not ANY work done so far today - so I must also use this opportunity to show off the dog products available in my shop.

First we have a tote bag in Lavender with a photo of Bailey the Retriever, this bag is also to show the possibility of your very own photograph which can also be used in a tote bag design.

SimJaTa goes to Lockerbie

I am very pleased to announce that a selection of my tote bags/shoulder bags are now on sale at The Tartan Tea Room in Lockerbie.
My thanks to Sarah the boss lady, for agreeing to showcase my bags in her wonderful tea rooms, with the most amazing cakes ever, and a selection of craft items.

I should also thank my amazing husband for carefully driving the bags up to Lockerbie on Saturday, kitted out in his new 'Bags of Swank by SimJaTa' polo shirt (I thought I better draw the line at 'driver'). He did pop in to collect the handmade jams for our Woof Beginnings next show while he was there from the expert jam and preserve maker Alison (www.alisonsjamsandchutneys.co.uk).
I should also thank said husband for then spending the next day helping me buy a new computer after mine died a death, and reloading everything back onto it over the last few days.

With my Folksy shops, and now 5 outlets selling my Bags of Swank by SimJaTa products I think that is sufficient for one person for now.

Folksy Friday - Patchwork Showcase

I was wondering what to write about today, and struggling with feeling very sorry for myself after a particular horrid visit to the dentist, thankfully its all over now (bar the numb mouth) for another few months. When I came upon one of my fellow crafters needing a bit of a lift.

So, here are some of the fabulous creations by Cosmic Eden. Now I just love lavender, you can almost smell the aroma just looking at this (unless you dont like lavender, then you can just imagine something else)

What a lovely day today, far too nice to be working - thats my excuse anyway, all us crafters need a break from time to time, so today is mine. I thought I would share my little verse with you all (dont worry, I wont give up the day job)

The Folksy Crafter

First thing in the morning switch on the PC
Have there been any overnight sales for me?
Next is onto the forums, just for a quick peek
But whilst I am there maybe more goodies to seek
Or perhaps someone looking for a craft from me
Just one more look in ‘fancy a cuppa’ bit
Often the place to find the crafter’s wit

Hours can pass by, watch the crafters at chat
Sometimes wonder how we find time to craft
Busy busy on line to promote
Anyone want to buy a Tote?
Really must get down to some work
Being our own boss is the crafters perk
This next item will be the one to sell
Off the shelf it will fly by the sales fairy spell

Each item made with loving care and design
Why has it not sold yet? Can be heard as we whine
All our items are made to bring in the readies
But sadly the UK has to watch all the pennies

Happy Birthday to Alfie

Tomorrow our boy Alfie will have reached 3 years old. Isnt he handsome?

Alfie came to us on October 31st 2009 at 18 months old, not the easiest of dogs having had no socialisation, not a clue how to behave around other dogs and a bit on the dominant side. After 'that op' and some training classes and a lot of hard work he is getting much better, he still attends dog club training for obediance shows, is training at scent work each week (one day to be part of a team to search for lost dogs) and does agility. Alfie now even has some playmates on his walk, he plays with a super daft retriever called Zac and a chocolate Labrador equally as daft called Hugo, these are his favourite friends.

Tomorrow Alfie will have a special walk in the sunshine and maybe something nice and tasty for his tea. We might even go mad and buy him a brand new ball, ball is one of his favourites.

Folksy Friday, A touch of Art Deco

Good Afternoon all, for this week's Folksy Friday I have chosen the theme of Art Deco. I have recently discovered some fabrics in this theme and taken an interest - so took a look around Folksy and found some wonderful treasures in this theme, here are just a few I have chosen to show you. After a couple of weeks of major upheaval at SimJaTa studio's, with heating to fix and finally today my beloved shower mended I am happy to say that Bags of Swank can now continue full steam ahead.

Today I listed the Vintage Fabric Tote bag you can see here in the pictures, and it will be on its way to the post office shortly as already sold. The other two bags are on the future list, not yet in the Folksy shop, so you may wish to watch out for those. What an excellent discovery the bears, moose and fish fabric was, ideal for the wildlife fan, and great natural colours finished off with a superb wooden vintage button I found. Another VW Camper Van bag to come also, the last one sold quite quickly.

One Scarf sent off earlier in the week from the Special by SimJaTa shop, that has gone off to auction to help Cats in Care. With a custom order yet to start, then on to another auction item for a child in need. I have also sent off a sample tote bag for a possible new outlet, wont tell you anymore about that yet as still to be confirmed, though I have ordered some more fabric in anticipation, so fingers crossed on that one. Also had plenty of fun and games here last night attempting to hand dye some handles to match, think I need some more practice at that one.

Also have a house guest here this week, my friends dog 'Tigger' so he is keeping me quite busy as he is missing his Mum, we pop along to feed her cats twice a day too, luckily for me the post office is on the way, so helps to get those orders out on the same day.

Next blog post will be Folksy Friday already, how the week flies by.. Not a clue what theme to choose yet, hopefully I will be inspired tomorrow.
